Marta Atilano

Grade Level: 4th / 5th combination
School: Teresa Hughes Elementary School

In this video Marta uses a recipe for ice cream to provide a real world example of fractions. The students are challenged to discover the "mystery number" - the amount of ingredients needed per serving.

James Borden


Teacher: James Borden
Grade Level: 8th, Algebra 1
School: Gage Middle School

This class period is devoted to California Standard 6.0, "Students are able to sketch the region defined by a linear inequality". In the video example James draws on the students' background knowledge of graphing linear equalities. A student identifies a pattern and is encouraged to test his hypothesis.

This class period is one of several devoted to determing the area of an irregular polygon. In the video example David Clark explains how he organizes his seating to provide support for struggling students.

Brian Holland

In this video example Brian Holland addresses the challenges of teaching mathematics to English learners. By stressing academic language development he is able to provide students with the confidence and skills neccesary to succeed.

Academic Language in Mathematics Classrooms

This video highlights the use of Academic Language in Mathematics classrooms. Cathy Tennis discusses pairing students to maximize peer-to-peer learning. Johnny Rivera explains how math bingo uses the structure of a game to engage students in robust learning.
